The Billboard Effect: How We Designed KORAA's Chocolate Packaging to Stand Out

A chocolate bar gets a few seconds on shelf. In that window, a shopper has to notice it, understand it, and decide it's worth picking up. For KORAA, an organic chocolate brand sweetened with jaggery, we designed a packaging system to win those first few seconds and keep earning attention once the bar is in hand.

Who Is KORAA?

KORAA makes modern chocolate rooted in real ingredients. Every bar is USDA Organic, crafted with organic direct trade cacao, and sweetened with jaggery instead of refined sugar. The lineup spans eight SKUs, from Original Dark to milk chocolate flavors like Coconut Milk and Pistachio Milk.

It's a brand with a clear point of view and a product that backs it up. The packaging needed to communicate all of that without saying too much.

The Challenge

The better-for-you chocolate aisle is crowded, and a lot of it starts to look the same. KORAA needed packaging that felt premium and distinct from across the aisle, while still carrying a lot of information: flavor, cacao percentage, the jaggery story, organic certification, net weight, nutrition facts, and everything compliance requires on the back. The real challenge was balance. Too much information and the pack feels cluttered. Too little and the brand's best story, real ingredients with no refined sugar, gets lost.

Our Approach: A CPG Packaging Design System Built From Shelf Out

For KORAA, packaging wasn't treated as the final layer of the brand. It became part of the experience.

We started at the shelf, with how the bar reads from across the aisle, and worked inward to the details a customer notices once it's in their hands. The system we developed balances refined typography, clear hierarchy, product information, and the small details that make the whole thing feel considered.

A Wordmark That Works Like a Billboard

The KORAA wordmark runs oversized and vertical across the front of the pack, with the brand's lotus mark set inside the O. It's scaled to bleed off the edge, so a single bar reads as a bold graphic moment and a row of bars reads as one unmistakable brand block.

Color That Sorts the Lineup

Each flavor has its own saturated color: teal for Coconut Milk, olive green for Pistachio Milk, and deep red for Original Dark. A subtle wave pattern runs underneath, and all type is set in a warm, kraft-toned ink. The result is a family that feels unified while making it easy for shoppers to find their flavor at a glance.

Refined Typography and Hierarchy

We built a clear reading order for every pack. Flavor name first. Then chocolate type and cacao percentage. Then the sweetener story: "Sweetened with Jaggery. No Refined Sugar." A classic serif carries the flavor names with warmth and craft, and a clean sans handles net weight and supporting details. Every line has a job, and nothing competes with the brand mark.

A Back Panel Designed With the Same Care

The back of a pack is usually where design stops. We treated it as part of the story. The panel opens with the brand line "Modern Chocolate. Rooted in Real Ingredients." and a short note on jaggery, then moves into a structured lower section that organizes nutrition facts, certification, and scanning details so everything reads clean and holds up to compliance review.

One System, Eight SKUs

Every decision was built to scale. Once the system was locked, it rolled out across all eight SKUs, which means new flavors can slot in without reinventing the pack.

The Result

The result is packaging designed to work just as hard on shelf as it does in hand. From a distance, KORAA reads bold and instantly recognizable. Up close, it rewards attention with thoughtful typography, clear hierarchy, and details that feel intentional. The system also gives KORAA a consistent visual foundation for everything that comes next, from product photography to the brand's new website.

Why It Matters

In CPG, packaging is often the first real conversation a customer has with a brand. It's the ad, the storefront, and the product experience all at once. Treating it as an afterthought leaves that moment to chance.

KORAA shows what happens when packaging is built with intention. Start at the shelf, get the details right, and the product gets to speak for itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a CPG packaging design agency do?

A CPG packaging design agency develops the visual and informational system on a product's packaging: logo placement, color, typography, hierarchy, product claims, and the regulatory details every pack needs. The goal is packaging that stands out on shelf, communicates clearly, and scales across a full product line.

What makes chocolate packaging stand out on shelf?

Scale, color, and hierarchy. A bold brand mark that reads from a distance, a distinct color for each flavor, and a clear reading order for product information help a bar get noticed and understood quickly. Premium details like texture, restrained typography, and a considered back panel keep it feeling elevated in hand.
