How Brands Get Named When Someone Asks AI Instead of Google

AI search optimization is the work of making a brand quotable by the engines people now ask instead of searching. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for the best option in a category, an answer comes back naming a handful of brands. Getting named is not luck, and it is not the same work as ranking first on Google. Fredhall Assembly is a referral-only creative and growth studio based in Austin, Texas, and this is the

approach we use.

The short version: answer engines quote specific, checkable sentences from pages with one clear subject, and they trust brands whose facts stay consistent everywhere they appear. Most of what passes for AI search advice is traditional SEO with new vocabulary bolted on.

What Is AI Search Optimization?

AI search optimization, sometimes called generative engine optimization or answer engine optimization, is the practice of structuring content so that AI systems can extract, trust and cite it when generating an answer.

The distinction from classic SEO is worth being precise about. Traditional search returns a list and lets the person choose. An answer engine makes the choice, names a few brands, and most people never click through to verify. So the goal shifts. You are no longer competing for a position. You are competing to be the sentence the model reaches for.

Why Austin Brands Are Losing Traffic They Cannot See

Here is the uncomfortable part. When an answer engine recommends you and the person acts on it, you often see no referral at all. They read the answer, then search your brand name directly, or walk in, or call. The visit lands in your analytics as direct traffic with no story attached.

The reverse is worse. If a competitor is being named and you are not, you do not see a drop in rankings. You see a slow, unexplained softening of inbound, and nothing in your reports points at the cause.

For a local market like Austin, where buyers routinely ask an assistant for the best studio, spa, restaurant or agency in the city, that invisibility is the whole problem. The recommendation happens somewhere you are not measuring.

How Do AI Engines Decide What to Quote?

Nobody outside those companies can describe the mechanism precisely, and anyone claiming a formula is selling something. But the pattern across the systems is consistent enough to work from.

They favour content that states things plainly and can be verified. They favour pages with one clear subject rather than pages trying to cover a category. They draw heavily on sources they already consider reliable, which includes publications, directories and review sites more than it includes your homepage. And they reward consistency: a brand whose description, location and offering match across its own site, its listings and third-party mentions is easier to represent confidently than one that describes itself five different ways.

What Actually Works

Six things, in the order we would do them.

Answer the question in the first two sentences

Put the direct answer at the top of the page, before the context and the storytelling. A model extracting an answer reads the opening and takes what it finds. If your first paragraph is atmosphere, there is nothing to lift.

Write checkable specifics, not adjectives

"We are a leading provider of innovative solutions" gives a model nothing to work with. "We are a referral-only studio in Austin, Texas, working with consumer brands on packaging, websites and paid media" gives it a sentence it can quote. Numbers, dates, locations, materials, prices, named services. Specifics get cited. Claims get skipped.

One page, one subject

A page trying to be about six things is about nothing as far as extraction goes. Decide what question each page answers before you write it, and let the page answer only that. This is the single most common structural fix we make.

Structured data that matches the visible page

FAQPage, Product, LocalBusiness and Organization markup help a machine understand what it is reading. The rule that matters: the schema has to describe what is actually on the page. Markup that promises content the reader cannot see is a liability, not an advantage.

Get named where the engines already look

Your own site is one source among many, and not the most trusted one. Earned mentions, local press, legitimate directories, review platforms and genuine third-party roundups carry disproportionate weight. This is the part most brands skip because it is slow and cannot be shipped in an afternoon.

Keep your entity facts identical everywhere

Same business description, same location, same service list, same name formatting, across your site, your listings, your social profiles and anywhere you are written about. Inconsistency makes a brand harder to represent, and models hedge when they are unsure.

What Does Not Work

Keyword stuffing, now aimed at prompts instead of queries. Hidden text intended for machines rather than readers. Thin pages spun up per keyword variation, which actively hurt you by splitting one clear subject across many weak pages. Buying mentions from low-quality sites. And any product promising to get you into ChatGPT, since there is no submission process to buy your way into.

The honest version of this work looks a lot like good publishing. We built it into the site copy for a chocolate brand recently, mapping each page to one primary question before anything was written, and the thinking is visible in our KORAA packaging case study. Google publishes its own guidance on how AI features in Search work, and it is closer to ordinary content quality advice than most of the AI search industry would like you to believe.

How Do You Measure Any of This?

Imperfectly, which is the honest answer. Three things are worth doing.

Ask the engines directly and keep a record. Run the ten or fifteen questions a buyer would actually ask about your category, monthly, and log who gets named. It is manual and it is the most useful signal available. Second, watch direct and branded search traffic, since that is where AI-driven discovery tends to surface. Third, check whether your own pages are being quoted when you are mentioned, and which ones.

Anyone offering you a precise AI visibility score should be asked how it is calculated before you believe it.

What This Means for Austin Brands

If you sell in Austin, the question an assistant gets asked is some version of "what is the best X in Austin." Three things follow.

State plainly, on your own site, what you do and where you do it, in a sentence a machine could quote without editing. Earn mentions in the local sources that cover your category, because those are what the engines read. And start logging the answers now, so that in six months you can tell whether you are gaining ground or quietly losing it.

Our Austin-based studio treats this as part of website design and growth rather than as a separate product, because page structure, copy and earned coverage are what move it. You can read more about how we work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is structuring content so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews can extract, trust and cite it when answering a question. It is also called generative engine optimization or answer engine optimization. The goal is being named in an answer rather than ranking in a list.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity?

Answer the question in the opening two sentences, write specific checkable facts rather than adjectives, keep one subject per page, add structured data that matches the visible content, earn mentions in sources the engines already trust, and keep your business facts identical everywhere you appear. There is no submission process and no way to pay for inclusion.

Is AI search optimization different from SEO?

It overlaps heavily but the objective differs. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AI search optimization competes to be the source a model quotes inside an answer, which puts more weight on extractable phrasing, single-subject pages, factual specificity and third-party corroboration.

How do you measure AI search visibility?

There is no clean metric yet. The practical method is to run the questions your buyers would ask, monthly, and log which brands get named. Supplement that with direct and branded search traffic, since AI-driven discovery usually arrives without a referral. Treat any product claiming a precise visibility score with scepticism.
